これって英語で何て言う?

偶数週は、東京在住の日米夫婦・健一とレイチェルが主人公。「これ英語で何て言うのかな?」を考えます

「つまらないものですが」 This is a little something I got for you

Rachel: We had a visitor at the office the other day. He brought us a box of small, individually packaged "mizu-yokan," and he used a phrase I hadn't heard in a long time, and it reminded me of how funny the phrase still sounds to me and probably always will.

Kenichi: What was it?

Rachel: He said, "Tsumaranai mono desuga ..."

Kenichi: I don't think I've ever used that phrase. I don't hear it that much, either. Was he an old man?

Rachel: Yeah.

Kenichi: I figured.

Rachel: I understand that it's an expression of humility, but if you take that phrase literally, it's like, "Well, if it's such a boring thing, why would you go out of your way to bring it to me as a gift?"

Kenichi: It confused me when I was a kid, too. Is there a similar phrase in English?

Rachel: Not anything that's completely the same. If there were, the Japanese phrase wouldn't sound so strange to me. But I guess if you want to play down a gift that you're giving someone, you could say something like, "This is a little something I got for you."

Kenichi: Oh, yeah. I've heard you say that before. That level of humility makes more sense to me than the "tsumaranai mono desuga" level of humility.
