これって英語で何て言う?

偶数週は、東京在住の日米夫婦・健一とレイチェルが主人公。「これ英語で何て言うのかな?」を考えます

「とりあえずビール」 have a beer for now

Rachel: You know how everyone says, "We'll all have beers for now," when you go out for drinks in a group? It's always "toriaezu biiru!" unless you can't drink alcohol. Why is that?

Kenichi: What do you mean?

Rachel: Why is it always taken for granted that everyone will start off with a beer? We don't do that in the U.S.

Kenichi: You're just now asking me this after years of living here?

Rachel: It just struck me at a dinner with coworkers last night. I don't even like beer that much, but I've been following this "tradition" because, well, when in Rome ... you know?

Kenichi: (Jokingly) We're not in Rome, Rachel. I don't know why people say it. But you should just drink whatever you want. I don't think your coworkers will think you're not a team player because you decide to order red wine instead of beer.

Rachel: I'm not sure about that. There's a pressure to conform to unspoken rules. Even people who can't drink and order a soft drink are sometimes given a hard time.

Kenichi: If that's happening in work situations, that's harassment, and if it's happening among friends, they're not real friends.

Rachel: You're right. I'm going to say "toriaezu aka wain" next time.
