「今週のフレーズ」 tongue-tied

(Anne, Sean and Saori are talking)

Anne: I read an article about a boy who everyone believed was non-verbal due to a genetic condition. But his inability to speak turned out to be because he was literally tongue-tied.

Sean: What do you mean, literally?

Anne: This boy's tongue was tied, meaning he had ankyloglossia. (Opens her mouth and shows the underside of her tongue and points) Yaw hee hat hehe he.

Saori: We have no idea what you're saying, Anne.

Anne: You saw that membrane connecting the underside of my tongue to the floor of my mouth? With people who have ankyloglossia, that tissue is thick and short and prevents mobility of the tongue.

Saori: So what happened?

Anne: A dentist found that the boy had the condition, performed laser treatment to undo it, and the boy started talking!

Sean: Speaking of tongue-tied, I went on a first date yesterday and I got tongue-tied. I'm sure I left a horrible first impression.

Saori: What?! You suddenly got thick tissue in your tongue?

Sean: No, in this case, it means you have trouble speaking because you're nervous.
