「今週のフレーズ」 have someone at ~

(Saori and Anne are talking at a department store)

Saori: You didn't have to miss the company barbecue to help me babysit my sister's kids.

Anne: When you called me this morning and said you had to babysit your niece and nephew today and wouldn't make it to the barbecue, I felt bad. I imagine twins are a handful, so I figured I'd give you a hand.

Saori: You're so sweet.

Anne: (Giggling) I can't lie to you. You had me at air-conditioning!

Saori: What?

Anne: When you said you couldn't come to the barbecue, and that you'd take the kids to an air-conditioned play area, that was all I needed to know. Any activities in air-conditioned spaces always trump barbecues in the summer heat.

Saori: So it wasn't because you wanted to help me. You just wanted to have an excuse not to go to the barbecue.

Anne: You understand me so well.

Saori: People say things like, "But cold beer tastes better when it's hot outside!"

Anne: I would say that cold beer tastes perfectly delicious in an air-conditioned room. So I'm not missing out on much.

United Awareness
国連機関で活躍する女性たちに聞く

20180804_250 When it comes to helping the public realize the significance of conflict, environmental issues and other global problems, four female media experts at organizations related to the United Nations in Japan are ready to put their skills to work.

"We aim to present issues in an easily understandable format so you can place yourself in the shoes of others," Nemoto Kaoru, director of the United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo, told the Mainichi Weekly at the organization's office in Tokyo's Shibuya Ward on July 2.

Nemoto spoke alongside Yokokawa Yumiko, Japan Outreach Specialist of the United Nations University (UNU) Office of Communications; U.N. Information Centre Information Assistant Kishida Haruko; and Yasuda Yuko, Public Affairs Specialist of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Representative Office in Tokyo.

These organizations focus on issues from peacebuilding to gender issues and the peaceful utilization of space. The women said they strive to grab the attention of the media and the public while working to find a "Japan angle" for U.N. news.

Those attention-grabbing efforts can sometimes lead to collaboration with companies. The Information Centre, for example, worked with entertainment company Yoshimoto Kogyo Co. Ltd. to promote the U.N.'s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — 17 goals for the world to accomplish by 2030. Yoshimoto's comedians have not only taken up serious issues with an element of comedy, but linked the SDGs to revitalizing regional economies in Japan with video contests and film festivals.

Yasuda believes that U.N. organizations in Japan need such creativity to link the public with international society and expose the global issues the U.N. faces.

Nemoto emphasized that people don't need to belong to governments to get involved in U.N. activities.

"The U.N. is a place where private companies, citizen groups, individuals and celebrities can easily be a part of our activities — if they have the experience and drive to do so," she said. (Continued on page 11)
