(Anne and Saori are having brunch)

Anne: Today's Disaster Prevention Day, isn't it?

Saori: Oh, I'd forgotten about it.

Anne: I only remembered because my apartment building is having an evacuation drill. We've never had one before, but the management changed hands, and the new management company is going to hold them every year.

Saori: Did you know that September 1 was set as Disaster Prevention Day because it's the anniversary of the Great Kanto Earthquake?

Anne: And the quake struck around lunchtime, which is why so many fires broke out, right?

Saori: I didn't know about the time of the quake being a factor.

Anne: Anyway, I read an article saying that the U.S. military used the firestorms that swept across the Kanto region after the quake as a reference for what areas to target to create the most damage in the firebombings of Tokyo in World War II. Really dark, huh?

Saori: It is. Yet here, two women from formerly hostile countries are having brunch together.

Anne: We should never forget our past history, though, so that we don't repeat it.

Saori: I'm totally with you on that.

Beyond Conflict
レバノンを舞台にした映画 監督に聞く

20180901_250 Lebanese director Ziad Doueiri's newest film, "The Insult," opening in Japanese theaters on Aug. 31, shines a spotlight on and expands on various issues dividing society.

The movie, which was nominated at this year's Academy Awards for best foreign language film, is set in the Lebanese capital of Beirut. It follows the development of light bickering between a Christian auto mechanic and a Palestinian refugee construction worker into a lawsuit interwoven with ethnic and religious friction.

"This film is kind of looking at very divided people. It's not good versus bad. It's good guy versus good guy," the 54-year-old director told the Mainichi Weekly in an interview in Tokyo.

In Lebanon, there have been many fierce ethnic and religious conflicts, including the Civil War between 1975 and 1990. When the war ended, the Lebanese valued stability over all else, and actions such as reflecting on the war or assigning responsibility for the cruelty that occurred during its course were swept under the rug. People pretended as if nothing had happened. Doueiri revealed that even in Lebanese history textbooks, there is no mention of anything after 1975.

"Nobody said 'I'm sorry.' We have not learned from the lesson (of the Civil War) yet," says Doueiri.

In the film, during their debates in court, the two main characters learn that they share similar painful memories. That brings some changes in their minds as the day of the ruling approaches.

This movie is based on a quarrel that happened between the director and a plumber in his daily life. He points out that the story is relevant to American audiences because "people are very divided." In fact, says Doueiri, "This story applies to any place in the world." (Story by Yoshinaga Yasuo)
