これって英語で何て言う?

偶数週は、東京在住の日米夫婦・健一とレイチェルが主人公。「これ英語で何て言うのかな?」を考えます

「うがいする」 gargle / rinse out one's mouth

(Kenichi returns from a dental appointment)

Rachel: How was it?

Kenichi: Hold on. I'm going to go wash my hands and gargle.

Rachel: Good idea. Wouldn't want to catch any germs from outside.

(Kenichi returns from the bathroom)

Rachel: So how was your appointment? Do you have to go back?

Kenichi: Just once more. I only had one cavity. But what's bad are my gums. The dentist flossed between my teeth and my gums hurt and bled a lot.

Rachel: I told you you should be flossing!

Kenichi: I know. When the dentist told me to gargle and the water I spat out was red with blood, I immediately imagined you telling me, "I told you so!"

Rachel: You mean, when you "rinsed out your mouth," not when you "gargled."

Kenichi: Are they different? They're both "ugai," right?

Rachel: Yeah, but in English, when you're talking about washing out your mouth, you use the expression "rinse out your mouth," and when you're talking about washing out your throat, you use the word "gargle."

Kenichi: All these years, I've been using the word "gargle" for both!

Rachel: Sorry I never noticed. Better late than never!
